EDIT 16 Aug 2012: Replaced the old picture with a better one.

Here it is, my first ever wand. It was tentatively completed early January 2011 and modded Feb 1, 2011. (Modded again April 9, 2011) It was carved by hand from a birch dowel with whittling knives. 14 3/4" long.

Originally, the design had everything but the brown part of the shaft unsanded and colored black to achieve a woodburn effect, but that two color combo just looked too plain. So, I carved away the existing pommel's extra bits (it used to be pointy and angular) and rounded it off.

Total time (wand): about 12 hours
Total time (box): was my first one, still working out kinks, so about 5 hours.

Why can't my first wand be like this. T_T This is amazing! My first wand turned out like someone decided to eat a wand, and throw it up.

XD Actually, my first attempt turned out to be much different - it's still the same wand, but it was thicker before, and I had used markers instead of stain. After I made about five more wands, I decided to mod my own original wand, so I thinned it out some more and restained it with actual wood stain, so this is what it looks like now. :)

Beautiful workmanship! How did you get your hair inside your wand? I've been wanting to make my own (which is a dragon heart string core for which I was planning on painting some string gold, as I imagine once all the gore is cleared off that's the colour they would be, lol), but had absolutely no idea how to get it inside the wand.

Thank you! With the tools I have, I can only poke a very tiny hole (about 3 mm) into the tip. I used a sturdy sewing needle, but you have to be very very careful not to stab yourself. I just twirled it in place, applying pressure, for a few minutes. After you have your hole (I wouldn't recommend doing a full length core because it'll compromise the structure of the wood) cut of a tiny piece of hair and stuff it inside, then seal with glue or a wood filler!

wow that's awesome. im particularly fawning over the black swirl. i love everything about it. though the thickness at the end bothers me, your right, it does make it unique. i think its amazing you made this (from an experienced wood carver) did you make the box too? if so, i am thoroughly astonished. if not, where did you get it? i was also wondering, would you consider doing a wand commission later? o and when you said you wouldn't do the gradient again, did you mean you wouldn't do the burning effect again or just the gradient? omg sorry i have so many questions .A.,

That's ok, questions are good :) The particular piece of dowel I was using didn't want to be carved thin, so I left it thicker. I just finished a commission for a friend and so have one spot open at this time. If you'd like, you can note me for details :)

As for the gradient, the technique had quite a bit of luck behind it, so I'm not sure if I can do it again. But if I get a special request, I can try (but no guarantees, unfortunately).

Thanks for the feedback ^_^

Thank you!! Yeah, the gradient's really a pain to do and takes a long time. I'm probably not going to do it for my other wands so I don't mess them up on accident! ^^'
